Better Together
The Manhattan Beach 10k is a testament to the love of running and community spirit, and it's the local running clubs that truly embody the essence of camaraderie and passion for fitness.
Last year, over 500 participants, spread out over 20 groups, identified as part of a running club. These clubs, each with its unique identity and members, play an integral role in making the 10k a cherished tradition. Some clubs use the MB10K as their highlight race of the year, while for others, it’s the ability for members of a group to come together and celebrate a shared accomplishment.
These clubs include:
Club Ed Over 80 members participated in 2023!
Honda Running/Walking Club
South Bay Runners Club Over 100 members participated in 2023!
For those that are curious about joining a run club, they offer a myriad of benefits that extend far beyond the miles logged on the track or road. Each club is unique, so check them out, go for a trial run and see which fits with your goals, and your schedule.
6 Reasons to Join a Run Club:
1. Motivation and Accountability: One of the greatest challenges for any runner is maintaining consistency in their training regimen. It's all too easy to hit the snooze button or skip a workout when no one is holding you accountable. However, when you join a running club, you become part of a team where your absence is noticed and your achievements are celebrated. The camaraderie and friendly competition within the group serve as powerful motivators to lace up your shoes and show up, rain or shine.
2. Structured Training Programs: Many running clubs offer structured training programs designed to help members achieve their goals, whether it's completing their first 5k or qualifying for a marathon. These programs are often led by experienced coaches who provide guidance on everything from proper form and technique to injury prevention and recovery. By following a well-designed training plan tailored to your fitness level and aspirations, you can maximize your potential and minimize the risk of burnout or injury. Many clubs offer specific training plans for the Manhattan Beach 10k.
3. Social Connection: Running can sometimes be a solitary activity, but it doesn't have to be. Joining a running club opens the door to a vibrant community of like-minded individuals who share your passion for pounding the pavement. Whether you're swapping race stories, cheering each other on during workouts, or grabbing a post-run coffee or beer together, the bonds formed through running can lead to lasting friendships.
4. Safety in Numbers: Running alone, especially in secluded areas or during early morning or evening hours, can be a safety concern for many individuals. By running with a group, you not only reduce the risk of encountering potential dangers but also gain a sense of security knowing that you're surrounded by fellow runners who have your back. Additionally, in the event of an injury or emergency, there's always someone nearby who can provide assistance or alert authorities if needed.
5. Variety and Fun: Running clubs often organize group runs, races, and social events that add an element of excitement and variety to your training routine. We take a lot of pride in all the groups celebrating at the finish line, taking group photos and toasting a beer at Shellbacks after the race.
6. Access to Resources and Discounts: Many running clubs have partnerships with local businesses, running stores, and race organizers, which often translates into exclusive discounts, special offers, and access to valuable resources such as gear, equipment, and training seminars. By being part of a club, you can take advantage of these benefits and save money while pursuing your passion for running.
Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a novice runner, there's a place for you in the world of running clubs. So why wait? Lace up your shoes, find a club that suits your needs, and unleash your stride today.
